The camera control button on the Apple iPhone 16 now features a pressure-sensitive sensor. Various combinations of movements and presses enable a wide array of functions.
Here’s what the button can do:
- A single touch will launch the "Camera" app (or a similar third-party app)
- A single touch while the "Camera" is open will take a photo
- A long press will open the "Camera" and start recording video
- A light press will bring up controls or lock focus and exposure
- A double light press will open the camera preview menu with controls
- Swiping will switch between available settings options, as well as adjust the value of the selected parameter
This way, the button can be utilized to adjust zoom, exposure, depth of field, select filters, and much more. Importantly, third-party developers will also have access to the Camera Control feature in their applications, and it will function within social media apps as well.
Later this year, the button will work with the new artificial intelligence feature called Visual Intelligence. Users will be able to open the "Camera" and point it at an object to get information about it through a long press.
The camera control will act as a gateway for third-party tools. For instance, when users wish to search for a product on Google or use ChatGPT to solve a problem.
Users will also be able to adjust the double-press speed and the sensitivity of the light press. The button is coated with sapphire for a smooth texture, surrounded by a stainless steel frame. It is slightly recessed within the iPhone 16 frame, and the pressure sensor provides tactile feedback to create a sensation similar to that of a camera shutter.
