The DJI Action 5 Pro has been launched, featuring a "next-generation" sensor that promises enhanced video quality, a longer battery life, larger displays, and a new object tracking and centering function.
The Action 5 Pro is equipped with a 1/1.3-inch sensor (the same size as its predecessor, the Action 4). DJI claims the sensor now boasts a dynamic range of 13.5 stops, making it "the first action camera with specifications that rival professional cameras." The maximum photo resolution has been increased to 40 MP, up from 10 MP in the Action 4. The lens maintains the same 155-degree field of view and f/2.8 aperture as the previous model.
The camera can record 4K video at up to 120p in a 16:9 aspect ratio, as well as in 4:3 (3840×2880 pixels). The maximum resolution is 4K UltraHD (compared to the competing GoPro 13, which offers 5.3K at 8:7, 5312×4648). The new model also supports 1080p recording at up to 240 frames per second (up to 960 frames per second in frame interpolation mode). As before, footage can be recorded in 10-bit D-Log M and HLG for increased dynamic range.
DJI claims the camera can shoot "high-dynamic-range video in low light" at 4K/60 frames per second, preserving details in the shadows without overexposing bright areas. It features a SuperNight mode that utilizes AI noise reduction for relatively clear video in low-light conditions.
The new 1950 mAh battery offers up to 4 hours of continuous use, approximately 50% more than before. This improvement is aided by a new 4nm chip and an algorithm that optimizes energy efficiency.
"Even at low temperatures down to -20°C (-4°F), the camera can reliably record video for up to 3.6 hours," adds DJI.
One key new feature is object centering and tracking, allowing for stabilization-free shooting. The Action 5 Pro intelligently identifies the subject's position and dynamically adjusts the composition to keep the subject centered in the frame. This is achieved digitally, with a resolution reduced to 2.7K. The device offers "reliable stabilization" and a HorizonSteady mode that ensures stability during 360-degree rotations.
The Action 5 Pro is EN13319 certified, making it waterproof without a case up to a depth of 20 meters. It can automatically start recording as soon as you are underwater and comes with a new feature—a pressure gauge to log depth data for user safety.
Although the body remains the same size as before, both OLED screens have been enlarged by 16% due to thinner bezels. The rear screen now measures 2.5 inches. The device supports DJI Mic 2 for high-quality audio recording, and users can simultaneously utilize the built-in microphone for ambient sound.
Another innovation is the inclusion of 47 GB of internal memory and data transfer speeds of 80 MB/s via Wi-Fi 6.0 or USB 3.0. Other features include an updated Mimo app, live streaming over Wi-Fi, timecode synchronization for multiple cameras, and a pre-recording function.
The good news is that despite numerous upgrades, the new DJI Action 5 Pro is priced lower than the Action 4 at $349 for the Pro Combo, which includes the camera and one battery, a protective frame, quick-release mounting adapter, and more. The Action 5 Pro Adventure Combo is priced at $449, adding two additional batteries and a charger along with a 1.5-meter extension.
