Marketing = success, obviously.
During the latest financial report, Ubisoft's CEO Yves Guillemot announced that the company has invested the most resources and efforts into promoting Star Wars Outlaws compared to any other game in Ubisoft's history. The executive highlighted the anticipation for a strong launch of the project, given the positive sentiment within the gaming community.
Guillemot stated: "We are counting on a strong launch for Star Wars Outlaws. It is one of the most anticipated games in the industry this year, reflecting a truly powerful positive sentiment from the community. Moreover, we are launching the largest marketing campaign for a Ubisoft game to date."
However, a recently released gameplay video received negative feedback for its "unfinished" appearance. This raised concerns as there is only a month left until the release of Star Wars Outlaws (scheduled for August 30).
It’s worth noting that Ubisoft’s previous marketing campaigns have also been impressive in scale. For instance, the promotion for Watch Dogs in 2014 included numerous trailers, CGI animations, and live-action commercials, billboards, and other promotional materials. Estimates suggest that the marketing budgets for the Assassin's Creed series games have reached hundreds of millions of dollars. According to a financial report by Ubisoft, marketing expenses rose to €413.3 million in 2024 compared to €343.2 million in 2023.
Ubisoft is pinning high hopes on the coming months. The company anticipates not only the success of Star Wars Outlaws but also Assassin's Creed Shadows. Additionally, management notes the popularity of live service games, such as Rainbow Six Siege and XDefiant, which exceeded expectations after its launch in May 2024.
