According to the Fullerton Police Department, a Tesla electric car in "autonomous driving" mode crashed into a parked police car. No one was injured in the accident. However, in the body camera video of the police officer, it is seen how he had to move aside to avoid being hit.
According to the police statement, the officer was directing traffic in Fullerton, California, at the intersection of W. Orangethorpe Avenue and Courtney Avenue after a fatal traffic incident involving a motorcyclist. The statement notes that the police car blocking traffic had its emergency lights on, and several warning signals were placed on the road. It was only thanks to the quick reaction of the police officer that a new catastrophe was avoided, as the Tesla in "autonomous driving" mode did not even attempt to brake. The police officer noticed the approaching blue car in time and managed to move to the side.
The name of the person behind the wheel of the Tesla is not disclosed. According to the police, the driver admitted to talking on the phone during the accident. A local television station broadcast footage of the aftermath, showing the damaged Tesla and police car.
Recently, the name of Tesla's autonomous driving feature Full Self-Driving (FSD) was changed to Full Self-Driving (Supervised). The word "Supervised" should indicate to drivers that this feature should be used "under supervision," not relying solely on technology.
Tesla did not comment on this incident.
