The Chinese company Tencent has unveiled a project aimed at developing game engines using artificial intelligence. GameGen-O has learned from The Witcher 3, GTA V, and Cyberpunk 2077.

The capabilities of artificial intelligence are growing at an almost alarming rate. Generating images, video content, and fan dub overs has become commonplace. However, Tencent has gone a step further and launched a project for the extensive use of AI in game creation.

As noted on the official website (which was unavailable at the time of writing this article), GameGen-O allows for the generation of numerous high-quality elements, such as characters, dynamic environments, and complex actions and events. The goal of the project is to enhance and simplify the game development process while reducing time and costs.

The model was trained on data from "over 100 next-gen open-world games." Among them are The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, GTA V, Cyberpunk 2077, and Assassin's Creed: Valhalla. The video provides a brief overview of its capabilities.

The demonstration shows that there are still many opportunities for improvement, but this could potentially become a significant milestone in the development of video games. Both developers and regular users will be able to utilize this tool to easily create virtual worlds. If this technology continues to evolve, it could have a substantial impact on the gaming industry as a whole.

It seems that Tencent is not overly concerned about the use of copyright-protected content. GamePressure reached out to CD Projekt RED for a comment on this matter. The company stated that they are investigating the issue but have refrained from making any comments for now.

On one hand, such AI tools could significantly shorten the game development process, which can take years for AAA titles. On the other hand, it could raise concerns that games might become more generic and procedural (though sometimes people also “successfully” achieve this).
