Sysadmin vacancy at the Antarctic station "Akademik Vernadsky" - a universal specialist is required

The Ukrainian Antarctic station "Akademik Vernadsky" has announced recruitment for the 2025-2026 expedition. Among other positions, a system administrator is required.

The vacancy at the National Antarctic Scientific Center (NANC) has no age, gender, or other similar restrictions for participants. The main requirements are professional education, work experience, and the ability to work in isolated and extreme conditions in Antarctica. Candidates must not have chronic illnesses, health contraindications, the ability to work during deprivation, communicability, non-confrontational behavior. It is also desirable to speak English or Spanish.

The expeditions require geologists, geophysicists, specialists in atmospheric physics, and meteorologists. To support the scientists' lives, there will be a doctor, a cook, a system mechanic, a diesel electrician, and of course, a sysadmin. To join the expedition, applicants must submit an application and relevant documents by August 14. The detailed official announcement contains all necessary contacts, samples, explanations, and information about the selection process. Interviews with candidates can be conducted offline or online.

The sysadmin of the station "Akademik Vernadsky" must administer Ubuntu/Windows PCs, Proxmox, Portainer, Docker containers, understand OSI levels. They will administer the network based on Ubiquiti, HP, Mikrotik equipment (Firewall, 802.3ad, 802.1q, Routing). The candidate must understand Python scripts, monitor Prometheus, Grafana Zabbix. The administrator will maintain the operability of PCs and office equipment, RAID array, satellite communication at the level of service and repair service.

Skills will also be needed to lay cables in a blizzard, compile reporting documentation, understand radio communication rules and requirements. The sysadmin should also be able to explain to colleagues how to use services or equipment if necessary. Any other necessary skills in station conditions are also welcomed.

Of interest to many is the question: "What about mobilization and traveling abroad?". NANC submits a corresponding request to the border service and obtains a special permit. If a candidate is mobilized during the hiring process, "we cannot do anything about it here."

As can be seen, the job is complex, requiring a true all-rounder. But there is no war at "Akademik Vernadsky", and, as official photos attest, there is a bar and penguins - what more do you need?
