During the first half of 2024, more than 148 thousand individual entrepreneurs were registered in Ukraine, which is 10.8% higher than in the same period of 2023. For comparison, in the entire year of 2023, Ukrainians registered over 300 thousand new individual entrepreneurs.
At the same time, in June 2024, there was a significant decrease in the number of registrations of new individual entrepreneurs. In the last month of the first half of the year, the growth in entrepreneur registrations was negative - 30% compared to the same period the previous year. This situation was observed in all regions, with Kharkiv being the leader: -13.6% in May and -38.9% in June. This is likely due to the increase in terrorist attacks from Russia.
The highest number of new individual entrepreneurs were registered in Kyiv - almost 20.5 thousand, Dnipropetrovsk region - almost 14 thousand, and Kyiv region - over 11 thousand. Women became entrepreneurs more often - 59.8% of new individual entrepreneurs were registered by women, 40.2% by men.
“Such a significant gap between the share of women and men registered as entrepreneurs has not been observed before, although YouControl has been monitoring the gender structure of newly created individual entrepreneurs for over 8 years,” explains financial analyst Roman Korniuluk from YouControl, “Therefore, it can be assumed that there is some strengthening of the influence of mobilization processes on men's reluctance to register new entrepreneurial activities with state authorities. Moreover, the gender structure of closing individual entrepreneurs is the opposite: men closed their individual entrepreneurship 4 percentage points more often than women.”
The highest number of new individual entrepreneurs were registered in the retail trade sector - over 40 thousand, information technology - 19.6 thousand, and other services - 18.8 thousand.
In the first half of 2024, the pace of opening new companies increased by 5.6% compared to the same period the previous year. Almost 13.2 thousand new companies were created. The leaders in terms of registrations were Kyiv - 4.7 thousand, Dnipropetrovsk region - 1.1 thousand, Lviv region - just over 1 thousand. Wholesale trade leads in popularity among newly created companies - 1.9 thousand, transport and logistics - 1.1 thousand, and real estate operations - over 1 thousand.
Just like with individual entrepreneurs, in June 2024 there was a sharp decrease in the growth of company registrations, reaching -22% compared to June 2023.
