Sony's PlayStation 4 saved AMD from bankruptcy - confession from top 'red team' executive

Ten years ago, things weren't going too well for AMD. Analysts predicted that the "red team" would go bankrupt by 2020. In 2015, AMD reported a 10% decrease in revenue due to a shrinking PC market.

But a contract with Sony to manufacture chips for the PlayStation 4 helped AMD avoid bankruptcy. At least, that's what Renato Fragale, head of AMD's client gaming PC division, writes in his LinkedIn resume:

"... one of the most successful launches in AMD's history, which helped AMD avoid bankruptcy."

The PS4 from Sony wasn't the only console using AMD chips at the time. The Xbox One from Microsoft also ran on the company's system logic. While AMD's profits might have been relatively modest, Sony (and Microsoft as well) managed to sell millions of consoles with its chips.

One reason why Microsoft is not mentioned in Fragale's resume may be sales figures. As of today, over 117 million PS4 units have been sold, whereas Microsoft has only sold about 58 million Xbox One units, with analysts estimating that only 35 million were sold at the time.
