A recent patent from Sony outlines a future PlayStation console featuring a dedicated Save State button. This mode will remind emulator users of the save and load state function.
Instead of configuring the rewind function through key bindings like in emulators or using button combinations as seen on the Switch, Sony intends to introduce a dedicated button for this feature — likely positioned near the D-Pad.
“The user can enter rewind mode from active gameplay using one or more controller inputs to review recent gameplay (such as rewinding and fast-forwarding, playback, etc.), then return to the game.”
In its time, the 2003 game Prince of Persia: Sands of Time for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Nintendo GameCube featured a Sands of Time mechanic that allowed players to manipulate time to reverse unfortunate situations. It’s likely that a similar feature won't work in all games.
Of course, in multiplayer games, nothing can be rewound due to state synchronization between players and the server. Such a special button would only be usable in single-player games, and even there, the idea is questionable and could disrupt the gaming experience. However, in most games, saves and loads are already used for this purpose without needing a button.
