Sony is enhancing Discord integration on the PS5, allowing users to join voice calls directly from the console. Currently, Discord support on the PS5 requires manually transferring the call to the console using the Discord app on a mobile phone or PC. However, with the update, Discord is integrated directly into the PS5 dashboard, allowing users to quickly select a server or DM group. This update is gradually rolling out over the coming weeks, starting with PS5 owners in Japan and Asia, then in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, and eventually in the US and Canada. Users will need to update their PS5 to the latest system software version to obtain this new Discord integration. They will also need to link their PlayStation Network account to their Discord account. "To start, select the Discord tab in the Game Base in the PS5 Control Center and choose the Discord server or DM group you want to join," said Sabrina Medic, Senior Product Management Director for the PlayStation platform. "Then choose the voice channel you need. This will show more details, such as who is already speaking in the channel. You will also receive a notification on the PS5 console when another Discord user calls you, allowing you to join immediately." This PS5 update almost brings the Discord user experience on par with what Microsoft offers for Xbox. Microsoft first offered Discord support on Xbox to testers in July 2022 and then released an enhanced experience without the need for a phone in November 2022. Next week, Sony will also introduce the ability to share their PlayStation Network profile in any messaging or social media app. This feature generates a link for shared access or a QR code so people can easily add the user as a friend.
