An expert predicts that the limitations of the PlayStation 5 Pro's processor will hinder the launch of GTA 6 at 4K with a frame rate of 60 fps.

Recently, Sony announced the release of the PlayStation 5 Pro. This updated console version is expected to arrive approximately a year before the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6—a game that is likely to push the base PS5 to its limits. However, experts doubt that even the PS5 Pro will be able to deliver optimal performance for GTA 6.

Richard Leadbetter, a technical editor at Digital Foundry, believes that the trailer for GTA 6 released last year showcases graphics comparable to those on the original PS5 or Xbox Series X. However, he remains skeptical regarding the frame rate.

According to Leadbetter, it is unlikely that the PS5 Pro will be able to run GTA 6 at a consistent 60 frames per second. The issue lies not with the graphics processor, but with the central processing unit. The PS5 Pro uses the same CPU as the base model, making it extremely challenging to achieve 60 fps, especially if the original PS5 operates at 30 fps.

Despite this, the PS5 Pro will offer enhanced graphics for GTA 6. Leadbetter explains that players will enjoy higher quality visual effects, but likely at a frame rate similar to that of the base console. If GTA 6 can't maintain stable 30 fps, the PS5 Pro might increase the CPU clock speed by 10%, which could lead to more stable performance.

Regarding the $699.99 price tag of the PS5 Pro, Leadbetter notes that it's difficult to achieve the same level of graphics quality on a PC for a similar cost. The closest comparable graphics card—the RTX 4070—costs $540, and that's not including other components.

Leadbetter suggested that Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, might consider his decision not to release an upgraded version of a console for this generation to be the right choice. Xbox players already have a great way to play "high-quality games on PC, where enthusiasts have more freedom in hardware selection."

As a reminder, Sony will soon launch sales of refurbished PlayStation 5 consoles at a reduced price through its official PlayStation Direct store.
