At the beginning of the month, the service faced a 24-hour outage allegedly due to "botnet activity" of two accounts linked to the competitor company Stability AI.

On March 2nd, Midjourney reported a prolonged outage on its Discord server, supposedly caused by "botnet activity" Midjourney banned Stability AI employees after attempted data theftMidjourney banned Stability AI employees after attempted data theftA botnet is a computer network consisting of a number of hosts with running bots - autonomous software. Often, a bot in a botnet is a program that is covertly installed on a victim's computer, allowing the attacker to carry out certain actions using the resources of the infected computer. They are usually used for illegal activities such as spam distribution, password cracking on a remote system, denial of service attacks, obtaining personal information about users, stealing credit card numbers and access passwords., reportedly caused by employees of the company Stability AI (creator of the neural network Stable Diffusion):

“Someone from Stability AI tried to steal all the clues and pairs of images in the middle of the night on Saturday,” — quotes The Verge statement.

As a result, Midjourney blocked all Stability AI employees from using its service “indefinitely.” The company also introduces a new policy that prohibits employees of any company that engage in "aggressive automation" or cause service disruptions from using its neural network.

The CEO of Stability AI, Emad Mostak wrote on X that he did not authorize employees to perform such actions and is currently investigating the situation. He also added that if the outage was caused by Stability employees, it was "unintentional and obviously not a DDoS attack." Midjourney founder David Holtz wrote to Mostak in the same thread that he sent “some information” to help with the internal investigation.
