The Control Panel has been a fixture in Windows since its debut in 1985 and remains a favorite among experienced users, despite numerous changes. However, Microsoft is now set on completely phasing it out.
The interface of the Control Panel has undergone significant transformations over its 39-year history, yet according to Microsoft's announcement, its end is near. The company has confirmed plans to fully discontinue its support.
"The Control Panel is in the process of being phased out in favor of the 'Settings' app, which provides a more modern and streamlined experience," Microsoft stated on its support website.
The company has not disclosed exactly when it plans to retire one of Windows' most cherished and user-friendly features, but it is now certain that this will happen. The new 'Settings' application is gradually expanding and gaining more functionalities, although certain tasks can still only be performed in the Control Panel, or are more conveniently done there.
For many, the Control Panel remains a familiar tool. The 'Settings' app was introduced in 2012 with Windows 8 and has gradually taken over many of the Control Panel's functions. Rumors about the discontinuation of the Control Panel have circulated for nearly a decade, but Microsoft has never officially confirmed its removal until now.
Despite its diminishing functionality, the Control Panel remains essential for certain tasks that have yet to be integrated into the Settings app. This is likely the main reason it continues to exist.
