It seems that Denuvo has initiated a large-scale PR campaign aimed at improving its image among gamers following numerous complaints about its DRM protection.
Product manager Andreas Ulmann, in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, acknowledged the complexity of the situation:
“I’m a gamer myself, so I know what I’m talking about. Gamers find it really hard to see the immediate benefits when a developer or publisher uses our piracy protection services. Our protection simply works, and pirates cannot play protected games — this, along with the lack of obvious advantages, creates a negative reputation.”
According to a new study, piracy can take away almost 20% of a game's revenue. Ulmann explains that publishers spend hundreds of millions on developing AAA projects and seek "insurance" in the form of Denuvo. In his view, a game's success affects the duration of support, the number of updates, and the likelihood of sequels.
Regarding complaints about Denuvo's impact on game performance, Ulmann confirmed issues with Tekken 7. However, he noted that among the 60-70 games that annually receive Denuvo protection, such cases are rare.
The company has created a Discord channel for communication with gamers, but due to an overwhelming number of negative comments, administrators are forced to regularly open and close discussions.
Meanwhile, even large publishers are moving away from Denuvo's services. Recently, EA announced that Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be released without DRM protection, citing trust in players as the reason.
