In addition to the regular iPhone 16 smartphones, Apple has also unveiled the professional lineup of iPhone 16 Pro devices. The new flagship smartphones feature larger displays, with the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max now available with screen sizes of 6.3 and 6.9 inches, respectively (up from 6.1 and 6.7 inches for the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max).
The iPhone 16 Pro lineup is equipped with the A18 Pro chip, which features a 16-core neural engine for "astonishing performance" in Apple Intelligence functions (some of which will be available in beta in October). Apple promises a 17% increase in memory bandwidth, a 20% boost in 6-core GPU performance, and a 15% improvement in 6-core CPU performance compared to the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro.
A significant focus during the development of the iPhone 16 Pro series was placed on the camera system. It features a primary 48-megapixel Fusion Camera module with OIS, a new 48-megapixel ultra-wide module with autofocus, and a 12-megapixel telephoto module with 5x zoom. Now, the standard iPhone 16 Pro also includes a tetraprism in its telephoto camera, which was previously exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The iPhone 16 lineup introduces a new Camera Control button. This feature allows users to manage various shooting parameters (such as aperture or zoom), and with a software update later this year, it will also support a two-stage shutter.
Apple is bringing new photography styles. Users will be able to modify the styles of their photos even after the shot has been taken. The iPhone 16 Pro smartphones can record 4K video at 120 frames per second, and playback speed can be adjusted post-capture within the Photos app.
Apple has also enhanced the sound playback components of the iPhone 16 Pro. This includes four "studio-quality" microphones. Users will also be able to capture spatial audio when recording spatial video. Additionally, in a Voice Memos update later this year, users will be able to overlay a track onto recordings, which can be particularly useful for music recording.
The chassis of the iPhone 16 Pro smartphones is made from titanium. They are offered in four colors: black, white, natural, and a new "desert titanium." Apple also claims that the iPhone 16 Pro Max boasts "the best battery life in iPhone history."
The iPhone 16 Pro model with 128GB of storage is priced at $999, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max with 256GB of storage starts at $1199. Both new models will be available for purchase starting September 20.
