Apple kicked off its presentation by announcing the 10th anniversary edition of the Apple Watch Series 10. The new model has received numerous enhancements compared to its predecessor. One of these is the OLED display with wide viewing angles, which is larger than the display of the Apple Watch Ultra and is also 40% brighter than that of the Apple Watch Series 9.
The new Apple Watch Series 10 has a thickness of just 9.7 mm, making it 10% slimmer than the Apple Watch Series 9. The expanded display is the largest among all Apple Watches to date (30% larger than that of the Series 6), allowing an additional line of text to be displayed, which makes it easier for users to quickly check emails and messages. Both the display and the case feature more rounded corners than before.
The watch has a polished aluminum case and a new metal back, which houses various antennas for the smartwatch. Apple also offered a titanium case version in lieu of the stainless steel model. Despite the larger display, the watch is 10% lighter than its predecessor (20% for the titanium version).
It is waterproof up to a depth of 50 meters, allowing users to keep it on while showering, swimming, or surfing. The device includes a larger charging coil for faster charging. The Series 10 battery can reach 80% charge in just 30 minutes.
The Apple Watch Series 10 is powered by the new Apple S10 processor with a 4-core neural engine for artificial intelligence functions. This model is the first in the Apple Watch series to feature sleep apnea detection by monitoring the user's breathing throughout the night using a built-in accelerometer. This condition causes individuals to suddenly stop breathing during sleep and is typically detected using equipment that monitors the heart, breathing patterns, brain activity, and even limb movements. If the Series 10 detects signs of sleep apnea, the device will alert the user and provide a detailed report that can be shared with a doctor.
The new Apple Watch Series 10 will run on watchOS 11. The 2024 software introduces the ability to pause and further customize goals and activities, as well as a new Vitals app for checking nightly metrics, training loads, and pregnancy data.
The price of the Apple Watch Series 10 starts at $399 for the GPS-only option. The cellular model costs $499. The smartwatches are available for pre-order starting today, with sales beginning on September 20.
Apple decided not to release a new generation of the Watch Ultra but instead focused on updating the Apple Watch Ultra 2. The device features a new “satin black” color and sleep apnea detection capabilities. The titanium Milanese Loop band is made from a corrosion-resistant material, making it suitable for diving enthusiasts.
At the same time, watchOS 11 brings an update to Smart Stack — widgets that appear when you turn the Digital Crown and now display real-time activity. A set of health tracking features has also become available. The device is available for pre-order at a price of $799 and will go on sale starting September 20.
