Google has announced a new feature called Google Maps AR Experience. This will showcase what areas looked like in the 1900s. The AR Experience will also offer interactive maps that provide more information about the history of notable locations.

Google Maps will overlay augmented reality content on images captured by a smartphone camera. During searches, the system will superimpose AR content onto the Street View.

“When you search for a location in Google Maps that offers AR content, you can explore it directly from the app. Just tap the ‘AR Experience’ icon and lift your device to view it in Lens on Maps. If you’re not at a landmark, you can still see a view from anywhere in the world using Street View.”

The AR Experience will be available only for locations and structures that have cultural, social, or historical significance. One of the places for which Google is currently offering this feature is the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Soon, the company will be able to make the AR Experience available for more historical sites.

Google states that later this summer, the AR Experience will allow users to travel back to the 18th century. You will be able to see Notre-Dame Cathedral and its surroundings as they were in 1789, explore the Bastille before the French Revolution, or visit the legendary Tuileries Palace before its demolition.

To use the AR Experience, you need to find a historical site and select the feature. Google has not specified when exactly it will roll out the new feature or which platforms it will be available on.
