Apple has announced a new voice function in iOS 18 - Vocal Shortcuts, which will allow users to control their smartphone using phrases, without the need to call "Siri".
“With voice, iPhone and iPad users can set their own phrases to launch shortcuts and perform complex tasks,” the press release says.
Voice actions can be customized, for example, to enable "Do Not Disturb" mode, low power mode, or switch similar system settings.
Among other announced accessibility features is Eye Tracking for tracking eyes based on artificial intelligence, which turns the front camera into a device for scanning and tracking face movements, allowing a person with disabilities to control the device.
Another new offer, Music Haptics, allows people with hearing loss or hearing impairment to feel the music on their device through rhythms and vibrations. Right now, this feature will only be available in the Apple Music song catalog, but it will be released as an API for developers to work in other programs.
Meanwhile, the Vehicle Motion Cues option can help prevent motion sickness when looking at the iPhone or iPad screen in a moving vehicle:
“Animated dots at the edges of the screen represent changes in the motion of the vehicle to help reduce sensory conflict without interfering with the main content. Using sensors embedded in the iPhone and iPad, Vehicle Motion Cues recognizes when the user is in a moving vehicle and reacts accordingly. This feature can be set to automatically display on the iPhone or it can be turned on and off in the Control Center”.
Apple is expected to unveil iOS 18 at the WWDC developer conference on June 10, with the actual update coming later in 2024.
