A 1950s nuclear shelter near Sedbergh, England, reminiscent of the Fallout games, will be auctioned tomorrow with an estimated price of £15,000 to £20,000.
The small ROC (Royal Observer Corps) nuclear bunker is located in the countryside of Cumbria, England. The sale includes a plot of land, car parking space, and a few minor above-ground structures.
The bunker was constructed along with many others throughout the UK in the 1950s by the now-defunct Royal Observer Corps. It was utilized for monitoring enemy aircraft and recording potential nuclear strikes. Following the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s, most bunkers were decommissioned.
“This particular site was one of many built in the 1950s. It was designed to provide a protective shelter for three observers who would survive a nuclear attack. They were tasked with reporting nuclear explosions. … They had enough food and water for fourteen days, and a landline telephone and radio communication. The landline phone is connected and operational; internet access can be established via the phone line,” explains the seller, SDL Property Auctions.
Partially concealed by bushes, the shelter is accessed through a locked metal hatch and a 12-meter metal ladder. Despite its age, the interior is in decent condition due to recent renovations made by the previous owner.
The space is not recommended for those with claustrophobia due to the lack of windows and natural light. The bunker does not have amenities such as a bathroom or running water—however, it is quite suitable for short stays. Inside, there are several seating areas, a wood-burning stove, storage for supplies, fuel, and a trash bin. For those interested, don’t miss out; the auction starts tomorrow, July 25, at 9:00 AM local time.
