The Chinese automaker Dongfeng Motor has launched its new affordable electric vehicle, the Dongfeng Nammi Box, in Europe. This model is set to be one of the least expensive electric cars in Europe, aimed at competing with local brands such as Volkswagen and Citroën.

Dongfeng is one of the oldest and largest automobile manufacturers in China, being the second state-owned automotive brand established after FAW. Considering the new EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports, the Nammi Box may be one of the first cars that the company manufactures at a potential Dongfeng plant in Italy. Discussions between Dongfeng and the Italian government are reportedly "at an advanced stage." The factory could help the automaker avoid high tariffs and offer its vehicles at lower prices.

The Dongfeng Nammi Box is a compact electric hatchback built on Dongfeng's own S3 platform. The car is equipped with a single electric motor producing 94 hp. It features a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 5-inch digital instrument panel, and wireless charging for smartphones. A notable design aspect is the ability of the front seats to recline flat, allowing them to serve as makeshift beds.

In Europe, the Dongfeng Nammi Box is available in just one configuration with a 42.3 kWh battery, providing a range of up to 310 km (WLTP). Although a smaller battery option (31.5 kWh) is available in China, it is not expected to be offered in Europe.

The electric vehicle is currently available for reservation in Switzerland, starting at 21,990 Swiss francs (approximately €23,000 or $25,500). For comparison, the competing local electric vehicle, the Citroën e-C3, which is one of the most affordable electric cars currently for sale in Europe with a 44 kWh battery and a range of 320 km, is priced at €24,640 or $27,300.

Additionally, Dongfeng's premium brand Voyah is planning to launch a new electric SUV named Zhiyin for export next month, according to CEO Lu Fang.
