YouTube continues to fight against ad blocking. In June of last year, the service conducted a small experiment on this matter, then in October started a full-scale attack on ad blockers. Now the company is once again tightening restrictions in this area.
YouTube has announced that it will start applying a policy prohibiting ad blocking for third-party apps that violate the YouTube Terms of Service. In this case, YouTube uses the term "ad blocking apps", although it can be assumed that third-party players with built-in ad blocking may also be targeted by the new restrictions.
Ad blocking apps, such as AdGuard, allow users to open YouTube in the app, where they can watch videos without ads. Now this will no longer be possible. If you try to use this workaround, you will experience video buffering issues and see an error message saying "This content is not available in this app".
YouTube emphasizes that its terms do not allow third-party apps to disable ads, "as it prevents the author from getting rewarded for views, and ads on YouTube help support creators and allow billions of people around the world to use the streaming service."
If ads on YouTube bother users, the service offers a paid version, YouTube Premium, for ₴99 per month.
