The popular Volkswagen Transporter van of the next generation will, for the first time, be offered with fully electric and hybrid powertrains. Diesel engines will also be available in the seventh generation of the van.
The new Transporter will provide more space, a higher payload, and an increased maximum towing weight compared to its predecessor. The manufacturer will release both cargo vans and a passenger version in the form of a minibus. Some versions will be optionally available with a high roof and an extended wheelbase.
The cargo volume in the panel van version of the Transporter with a standard wheelbase and roof has increased by more than 10% to 5.8 m³. The versions with a long wheelbase and high roof offer a cargo capacity of 9.0 m³. The maximum payload has also increased by 10%, now reaching up to 1.33 tons. At the same time, Volkswagen has raised the maximum towing weight by 0.3 tons to 2.8 tons (with brakes, on a 12% incline).
The new Volkswagen Transporter will be available with 7 powertrains: three electric, one hybrid, and three diesel.
The e-Transporter will feature electric motors with outputs of 136 hp, 218 hp, and 286 hp. All three engines will be complemented by a 64 kWh battery. Volkswagen has not yet announced the range for the electric Transporter version.
The Volkswagen Transporter eHybrid plug-in hybrid features a powertrain that delivers 323 hp. The diesel engines provide outputs of 110 hp, 150 hp, and 170 hp. The most powerful diesel engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The six-speed transmission is standard for the 150 hp engine, while the eight-speed option is available additionally.
All models feature an updated cabin that offers a 12-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 13-inch central touchscreen for the infotainment system. It also includes various USB and 12V sockets, with the option to add one, or up to three 230V sockets in hybrid and electric models. Wireless connectivity for smartphones via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard. Additionally, features like LED headlights, lane-keeping assistance systems, and traffic sign recognition are mentioned.
The next-generation Volkswagen Transporter is set to be unveiled in early next year.
