The digital trace of "the most mysterious song on the Internet" dates back to 2004, when Darius S. from Germany uploaded digitized recordings of tracks he had made as a teenager in 1984 from broadcasts of a radio show.
In the following years, his sister Lydia, driven by curiosity, began posting snippets of the song on various fan sites for "music seekers" under the pseudonym Anton Riedel. At the time, many speculations arose concerning the artist: some noted a German (and sometimes Polish) accent in the singer's voice; others suggested that the song was incomplete and merely a demo version that accidentally reached the hands of a DJ who loved independent music and experimentally aired it.
During this time, "the most mysterious song on the Internet" gained considerable popularity online and even became the soundtrack for the MyHouse.wad mod for Doom.
A breakthrough in uncovering the mystery occurred in 2019 when a teenager from Brazil uploaded a clip of the song to YouTube, shared it across several Reddit groups, and even created a dedicated subreddit r/TheMysteriousSong, where it was eventually identified.
It is now known that the song is titled "Subways Of the Mind" and was written by the group FEX—Reddit users contacted one of its members, Michael Hedrich, who even provided a full recording:
Hedrich himself, who continues to create music under the name Silk Vision in a studio in Munich, stated in an interview with German media that the band had no idea about the "mystical" status of their song, but now they plan to record a new version, possibly with a music video.
The breakthrough in the search occurred after members of r/TheMysteriousSong began going through band lists in the archives of a music festival in Hamburg. One member, named Marijn1412, wrote that the band was identified following a clue found in an old newspaper article mentioning FEX, described as a rock band "with wave and pop influences."
