Star Citizen developers are forced to work without days off - the company made $700 million on the game

Cloud Imperium Games, the developer behind Star Citizen, has mandated that employees work through the weekends in preparation for the Citizencon event on October 19.

In an internal email sent to staff on October 1, the company stated that it needs to "double down on efforts over the next 18 days to ensure we're creating a great experience for our community once again." This involves preparing patch 3.24.2 for Star Citizen and developing a demonstration for the story expansion, Squadron 42. Cloud Imperium Games outlined the requirements:

“This means that for the next two weekends, we will allocate additional time for everyone working on the results for Citcon.”

The document specifies that all staff members are required to be in the office on Friday, October 4, and Friday, October 11 (typically designated as remote work days). The same applies to Saturday, October 5, and Saturday, October 12. The company will provide breakfast and lunch on each of these Saturdays, and staff will receive time off later. Employees must also report to the office on Sunday, October 6, and Sunday, October 13, under similar conditions as Saturday. While remote work on Sundays is permitted, Cloud Imperium Games strongly encourages the team to come into the office.

After receiving information from unnamed sources and prior to publishing these details, the site Insider Gaming reached out to Cloud Imperium Games for confirmation but received no comments on the matter. Just 11 minutes after the site contacted the company, another internal email was sent to staff:

“I want to sincerely thank everyone who will put in extra time over the next two weeks; it will truly make a difference at Citizencon, as we present ourselves in the best light.”

As of May 2024, Star Citizen has raised over $700 million over 12 years through crowdfunding, which Cloud Imperium Games refers to as an "alpha test" — Star Citizen has millions of players. The company cannot be described as one facing financial difficulties that would require employees to work overtime. The missed deadlines are likely attributable to management miscalculations.
