In recent weeks, Google Messages users have begun to encounter problems when sending GIF animations from iPhone to Android devices. Such images arrive distorted - they lose animation and some pixels.
This issue has been noticed on Pixel, Samsung, and other Android devices. All GIF files were sent via SMS/MMS by iPhone owners.
Although many Android users have reported this issue, it does not affect every conversation between iPhone and Android. There are even cases where different Android users in the same group chat may encounter or lack problems with GIF files from iPhone owners. Therefore, it is quite difficult to identify a pattern.
Given the wide range of devices and carriers, it is unlikely to be an Android OS issue. It may be a problem with the Google Messages app. At the same time, there have been no reports of the same problem when sending GIF files from Android to Android. Thus, it can be assumed that iOS is the most likely culprit. The reason may lie in compression or playback errors.
In mid-May, the number of reports about this issue increased, although some Android users say they noticed it several weeks before. It is worth noting that on May 13, Apple released iOS 17.5, with beta testing starting on April 2.
It is also noteworthy that the problem arose on the eve of Apple's initiative to implement RCS on the iPhone. The launch of RCS is expected to take place this year. More information is likely to be revealed during the WWDC 2024 conference, which is scheduled to take place next month.
