The Embracer Group, the holder of rights to "The Lord of the Rings," has announced that it is developing several new games inspired by Tolkien's universe.
“We are actively testing and prototyping several new game concepts, exploring a wide range of engaging and authentic gameplay mechanics in the world of Middle-earth. We believe that deep and early engagement with the community is key to creating an experience that truly resonates,” wrote Embracer Group in its financial report.
One of the projects that Embracer is working on is a new MMO set in the Middle-earth universe, being developed in collaboration with Amazon Games. Additionally, a game titled Tales of the Shire is expected to be released this year, promising a cozy atmosphere. Lee Guinchard, head of the "Lord of the Rings" division at Embracer, has previously expressed hope for a revival of games based on this franchise.
Over the years, the franchise has seen a number of iconic games inspired by "The Lord of the Rings." The early games based on the films were particularly well-received, along with the newer titles Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. For younger audiences, Lego Lord of the Rings and Lego The Hobbit have gained popularity.
However, not all projects have been successful. The game The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, released in 2023, received very low reviews from critics. Following this, the developers at Daedalic Entertainment canceled the next planned game related to "The Lord of the Rings" and announced a halt in game development entirely.
In addition to video games, Embracer is collaborating with Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema on several upcoming films. Among these is "The Hunt for Gollum," directed by Andy Serkis, who is well known for playing Gollum in Peter Jackson's original trilogy.
