This device is regarded as one of the rarest in the history of video games.

In the early 1990s, Nintendo announced a partnership with Sony to develop a new PlayStation console that would support both Nintendo cartridges and Sony CDs. At that time, CD-ROM technology was seen as revolutionary, offering more than 100 times the storage capacity compared to traditional gaming cartridges or floppy disks.

However, Nintendo later abandoned the deal and partnered with Philips to create the Philips CD-i system, which ultimately failed. Sony continued the development of the PlayStation as an independent console. Despite this, the Nintendo PlayStation prototype was completed, becoming an extremely rare collectible and an interesting historical artifact.

In 2020, a Nintendo PlayStation prototype was sold at auction for $360,000. Now, Heritage Auctions has sold a Nintendo PlayStation controller prototype for $35,000. This is a significant amount for a device that visually resembles a Super Nintendo controller but features Sony and PlayStation logos.

Experts estimate that around 200 Nintendo PlayStation prototypes were created, most of which were destroyed after the agreement was terminated. The PlayStation and PlayStation 2 quickly outpaced Nintendo's consoles and became the leading gaming platforms for the next decade.

After the 16-bit era, Nintendo continued to use cartridges for the Nintendo 64, only transitioning to optical media in 2001 with the release of the Nintendo GameCube. Later, the company began a trend towards motion controllers with the Nintendo Wii, and in 2017 introduced the hybrid console Nintendo Switch, which combined home and portable systems.
