Marvel and NetEase Games have announced a new game called Marvel Rivals. It is a multiplayer team-based hero shooter featuring superheroes and supervillains from the Marvel Universe. In it, two teams of six heroes will face off on battlefields such as Asgard and Tokyo 2099, which are designed to be destructible.

Marvel Rivals is being developed by a team of developers who have worked on franchises like Call of Duty and Battlefield. The game has an Overwatch atmosphere, being a free-to-play game with an expandable roster of heroes and villains, but played in third person. Currently, eighteen heroes and villains have been confirmed: Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Groot, Hulk, Iron Man, Loki, Luna Snow, Magik, Magneto, Mantis, Namor, Penny Parker, Rocket Raccoon, Scarlet Witch, Spider-Man, Storm, Star-Lord, and Punisher.

At least 12 of these characters will be playable in the upcoming alpha test. Given the vast population of the Marvel Universe, it can be expected that this number will increase.

A feature of Marvel Rivals is the ability for Team-Up - multiple characters can join forces to achieve stunning effects. For example, Groot and Rocket Raccoon team up for shooting, while Hulk can borrow Tony Stark's powerful gamma radiation to enhance his weapon.

The trailer showcases various powers and abilities inherent to Marvel heroes. Doctor Strange creates portals through which his team can travel. Loki transforms into other characters, gaining their superpowers. Black Panther summons a giant version of Bast to crush enemies.

Marvel Rivals Game Director Thaddeus Sasser said that the heroes and villains in the game will have a variety of powers, and characters will not be tied to specific class roles. However, there will be something like categories, such as tank, damage dealer, and support, to help players understand what each hero will do.

Developers call Marvel Rivals a shooter because of the game's style, but it will combine ranged, melee, and hand-to-hand combat styles.

"Why give a hero like Hulk a pistol?", ─ says Sasser.

Currently, developers are refining some of the game rules, particularly regarding character selection and restrictions that will apply to teams. Details about game modes will be available soon. An alpha test of the game is planned for May. Marvel Rivals will be released on PC, but the exact release date is currently unknown.
