In the past, one of the most influential Hollywood producers first faced allegations of rape back in 2017, when The New York Times revealed serious disclosures of his misconduct.
After that, more and more people claimed to have been sexually exploited by Weinstein, and in February 2020 he was first convicted of rape. Now, according to reports from the Associated Press News, this verdict has been overturned. The New York appellate court ruled that the judge presiding over the case had made "flagrant errors," including allowing the victims to testify on charges that were not directly related to the case.
The decision essentially frees Weinstein from a 23-year sentence, although the ex-producer will still be behind bars in the near future — previously he was sentenced to 16 years for another rape in Los Angeles in 2022.
The exposure of Weinstein sparked the #MeToo movement — subsequently, millions of people used the hashtag to tell the world about the various forms of sexual violence they have experienced.
