Initial tests indicate that the Google Pixel 9 smartphones may not appeal to mobile gamers. The Tensor G4 processor performed worse in Genshin Impact compared to the G2 in the Pixel 7.

Owners of the Pixel 9 Pro XL might be disappointed with the smartphone's performance in Genshin Impact. It's not just a matter of low performance—the processor operates slower than the Tensor G2 in the Pixel 7 Pro. Testing revealed that the thermal characteristics of the Pixel 9 Pro XL are decent, but its gaming performance falls short.

While testing, the YouTube channel Dame Tech found that the Pixel 9 Pro XL delivers an average frame rate of 39.2 FPS in Genshin Impact at 720p resolution with maximum visual effects. In comparison, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra performs 31% faster, while the Apple A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro Max surpasses the Pixel 9 Pro XL by 51%. Perhaps most shocking is that the Tensor G4 is slower than the Tensor G2, which is used in the Pixel 7 Pro.

The two-year-old Google processor achieves an average frame rate of 45.3 FPS in Genshin Impact, making it 15% faster. The Tensor G4 runs cooler—operating at 37 °C without throttling performance. Researchers suggest that Google may have reduced the chip’s performance and consumption to avoid overheating.
