The EigenLayer protocol team, which conducted the listing of its own EIGEN token on October 1 and announced the second season of its airdrop, reported a theft of 1.67 million tokens amounting to approximately $5.7 million. It is already known that this incident is unrelated to any hacking of the project. The assets were mistakenly transferred to a scammer's address. The hacker compromised the email through which one of the investors was sending tokens for storage. The perpetrator then quickly sold the tokens on a decentralized platform and subsequently transferred the obtained stablecoins to several cryptocurrency exchanges.

“The compromise did not affect the entire ecosystem as a whole. There are no known vulnerabilities in the protocol or token contracts, and this breach is not related to any blockchain functionality,”stated in EigenLayer.

Some of the scammer's assets have been frozen.

In light of this news, the EIGEN token experienced a drop, trading at around $3.1. The price has now risen to $3.51.

Shortly after its listing on Binance and other leading exchanges, the price of the EIGEN token fell by more than 15%. The community expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of the EigenLayer team: initially, users were upset about the airdrop conditions, and then it became known that investors were allowed to stake their coins immediately after the unlock. Moreover, the team did not communicate this beforehand, instead simply adding the relevant information to the update documentation. This undermined user trust in the project, causing the growth of the EigenLayer network to begin to decline.

The EigenLayer protocol is built on Ethereum and has introduced a new approach called “collective restaking.” This allows those who are already staking (freezing) their ETH cryptocurrency to participate in additional projects using the same stake.
