Electronic Arts has decided to abandon the development of The Sims 5, instead opting to focus on enhancing The Sims 4, while Amazon MGM Studios has announced the creation of a film inspired by the popular video game.
Electronic Arts (EA) is making a significant shift in its strategy for the The Sims series. The company has officially canceled the development of The Sims 5, known as Project Rene, and has announced its concentration on further improving The Sims 4. Kate Gorman, the vice president and general manager of The Sims at EA, explained this decision is driven by the desire not to make players lose a decade of progress in The Sims 4.
"We are not looking to replace previous projects; we are only looking to expand our universe," Gorman noted.
EA and developer Maxis plan to release updates and premium expansions for The Sims 4, which has become the longest-running game in the series' history. Players will receive a new multiplayer mode and the option to purchase user-created content in the official EA store.
Despite the cancellation of The Sims 5, the franchise continues to evolve in new directions. Today, Amazon MGM Studios announced that it has started developing a movie based on Electronic Arts' The Sims video game. Kate Herron, known for the Disney+ series "Loki," has been appointed as the film's director, and she will co-write the screenplay with Bryony Redman.
- The Sims, which launched in 2000 as part of the Sim series, allows players to create virtual people, design their homes, and manage their lives.
- In nearly 25 years (the anniversary will be in 2025), the franchise has gained immense popularity, releasing four main games and numerous expansions.
- The Sims 4, released in 2014, has a base of nearly 80 million users.
