The new smartphone from Apple, priced starting at $799, scored only 142 points in a detailed analysis of its display conducted by DxOMark.
Mid-range devices like the Samsung Galaxy A35 5G and Google Pixel 8a outperformed it with scores of 143 and 145 points, respectively. In comparison, the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL leads the ranking with 158 points.
Apple equipped the iPhone 16 with a 6.1-inch OLED panel featuring a resolution of 2556×1179 pixels. The manufacturer claimed a maximum brightness of 2000 nits in sunlight; however, the DxOMark laboratory recorded a figure of 1969 nits. This is significantly lower than the 2548 nits offered by the Samsung Galaxy S24.
DxOMark experts identified issues with SDR content display in low-light conditions, noting inadequate contrast and image dimming. When watching HDR10 videos, there were notable fluctuations in brightness.
The testers emphasized that the 60 Hz refresh rate does not provide sufficient smoothness in visuals. The touchscreen is responsive and accurate to touches, but in landscape mode, the system incorrectly registers touches in the corners of the display.
DxOMark experts also pointed out the advantages of the iPhone 16. The screen does not flicker in low-light conditions, making it comfortable for reading. Users can adjust brightness across a wide range of values. The display also features accurate color reproduction and effective blue light blocking. Due to these characteristics, the smartphone received a special DxOMark Eye Comfort award.
As a reminder, recently the iPhone 16 Pro Max set a record in the PhoneBuff test for battery life, lasting 28 hours and 14 minutes.
