Heineken and the retail marketplace Bodega have released "The Boring Phone". It is manufactured by Human Mobile Devices (HMD). This is a special limited series of functional phones with limited technical characteristics. It was created to encourage people to engage in live communication in their free time, disconnecting from their smartphones.
The Heineken x Bodega "Boring Phone" frees users from the distracting factors of modern smartphones. It offers basic features such as calls and SMS messaging. Social functions and networks, as well as other modern mobile applications that consume users' time and distract from real life, are not available on it.
A study commissioned by Heineken showed that 90% of representatives of the Zoomer and Millennial generations in the UK and the USA constantly scroll through social media while communicating with friends and family, checking their devices an average of 7 times in the evening. Two thirds of those surveyed admitted to opening social networks (62%) while communicating with others, while over a third (36%) confirmed they check work emails. 30% of respondents also noted that they sneakily play games instead of communicating with family and friends. At the same time, 32% of respondents would like to be able to disconnect from their phones in the evenings and on weekends. To have less dependency on social networks, 22% of respondents turn off or leave their phones at home before social events, and 38% say they are considering doing the same.
The "Boring Phone" allows you to solve this problem while staying connected. The transparent case and holographic stickers are intended to remind people of mobile phones from the early 2000s. The device is in a flip phone form factor. It has an internal 2.8-inch QVGA display and an external 1.77-inch QQVGA screen. The 128 MB internal storage can be expanded with a memory card up to 32 GB. For entertainment, there is an FM radio, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a 0.3-megapixel camera. The device supports 2G, 3G, 4G networks, and the ability to install two SIM cards. The removable 1450 mAh battery provides up to 6 hours of talk time on 3G/4G networks, up to 20 hours of talk time on a 2G network, and over a week of standby time. The device measures 108x55x18.9mm and weighs 123 g.
The "Boring Phone" will be distributed as gifts on social networks in the UK, while on other markets the device will be available later this year. In June, an application will also be launched that can make smartphones "boring" to give people the experience of the "Boring Phone" without the physical device.
