Brochure of the German-French corporation KNDS, which demonstrates the latest development of the company: the new main battle tank Leopard 2A-RC 3.0, has been revealed online. The tank is based on the Leopard 2 chassis and features a revolutionary unmanned turret.
The Leopard 2A-RC 3.0 is operated by a crew of three - commander, gunner, and driver-mechanic. The unmanned turret is completely separate from the crewed chassis. It has the latest gun aiming system and is extremely flat, improving the tank's profile and reducing the area where the tank can be hit by 30%.
The tank has enhanced crew protection, an adapted turret for various calibers, and a modular automatic loading system that allows firing three rounds in ten seconds. The armament kit is adjustable for both direct visibility and beyond.
The Leopard 2A-RC 3.0 tank weighs less than 60 tons. It is 7.95m in length (11.17m with the gun), 3.77m in width, and 2.44m in height to the roof of the turret and 2.84m to the top of the superstructure systems. With an engine power of 1100 kW (1500 hp), the tank can reach speeds of over 65 km/h with a range of 460 km. It has a ground clearance of 500mm.
It includes an enhanced set of sensors for improved tactical and situational awareness, control tool for unmanned aerial vehicles, digital mission control system, and a 4D fire control system using X-by-Wire technology. The sensor set includes optronics and numerous detection systems: laser warning, optical detection, and drone detection.
The development of main battle tanks with unmanned turrets is a modern trend in armored vehicle development. Among other attempts to implement this technology are the American demonstrator tank AbramsX and the Russian T-14 "Armata".
