Meta introduces the Meta Horizon OS operating system and collaborates with Microsoft to create a limited edition Meta Quest virtual reality headset, "inspired by Xbox". The companies do not disclose details about this headset, but it appears to be a current model of Meta Quest or a future headset that will be bundled with an Xbox controller.
"Last year, Xbox and Meta joined forces to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming (beta) to Meta Quest, allowing people to play Xbox games on a large 2D virtual screen in mixed reality. Now we are working together again to create a limited edition Meta Quest, inspired by Xbox," Meta said in a statement.
The partnership with Microsoft is described as simply a limited version of an existing headset for Microsoft. Collaboration with Lenovo and Asus is also mentioned.
"Leading global technology companies are already working on new devices based on Meta Horizon OS. ASUS Republic of Gamers will use its leadership experience in gaming solutions to develop a completely new high-performance gaming headset. Lenovo, for developing mixed reality devices for performance, education, and entertainment, will use its experience in collaborative design of Oculus Rift S as well as deep expertise in developing leading devices such as the ThinkPad series laptops."
In an Instagram note, Mark Zuckerberg says that the announced headset will "come with Xbox controllers and Game Pass in the box, so you can start playing on a large screen right away, wherever you are."

The company talks about Meta Horizon OS tracking eyes, faces, hands, and bodies, "a full set of technologies to unite the digital and physical worlds." The operating system, "which started based on the Android Open Source Project," will enable developers to use Meta technologies, including "content detection platforms and monetization embedded in the OS."
The now more open Meta Quest Store will be renamed the Meta Horizon Store. Devices with Meta Horizon OS will use the same companion mobile app used by current Meta Quest owners — it will be renamed Meta Horizon.
"Together with a more open app store, Meta Horizon OS will continue to provide people with more opportunities to access apps. Since we do not limit users to apps from our own store, there are several ways to access great content in Meta Horizon OS, including popular gaming services like Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, or through Steam Link or our Air Link system for wireless streaming. And we encourage the Google Play 2D store to transition to Meta Horizon OS, where it can operate on the same economic model as on other platforms," the statement said.
