The technical startup Kurs Orbital has received a new financing tranche of $4 million. These funds will be directed towards accelerating the commercialization of satellite servicing technology.
The Kurs Orbital startup was founded in 2021 by the former director of the Ukrainian Space Agency, Vladimir Usov, and is now based in Turin. The company aims to develop new human activities in space, providing opportunities for satellite maneuvering and removal of space debris. The startup itself does not plan to provide these services, but aims to become a leading supplier of necessary approach and docking technologies. This is planned to be done through the ARCap module, which can be integrated into any spacecraft bus.
The Kurs Orbital technology is based on the "Kurs" system - a legacy of the Soviet era, which was developed for docking spacecraft to the "Mir" space station. Unlike other similar developments, the Kurs Orbital module will be able to dock with "non-cooperative" targets or spacecraft that are not equipped with any docking equipment in advance.
The company aims to prepare the first ARCap module for flight into space in the fourth quarter of 2025, although Usov has refused to provide any details about the first mission.
