Microsoft started testing new features in Notepad back in March, and as of today with the update, they will be available to all Windows 11 users via the Microsoft Store.
The spell-check feature, which appears in Notepad 41 years after its launch, will highlight a word in red if it is spelled incorrectly, and users will be able to right-click on it to see alternative suggestions (the update is not yet available for the Ukrainian language).
Autocorrection, meanwhile, works automatically and corrects minor and obvious spelling errors or typos (they can be manually reverted).
New features can be deactivated in the Notepad settings or customized for specific file extensions (for example, only for .txt files, but not for .md or .lic files).
According to The Verge, spell-check is disabled by default for journal files or "other types of encoding-related files."
Microsoft often rolls out updates gradually, so not all users will see the features right away.
It is worth noting that updates for Notepad in the Windows 11 era are not new: the program previously received a tabbed interface, dark mode, and built-in character counter.
