GPD has prepared to launch its first pocket-sized device powered by the AMD Ryzen AI 300 Strix processor. The new GPD Pocket 4 features a modular design, allowing users to customize the device according to their individual needs.
The new model boasts an 8.8-inch LTPS display with a resolution of 2.5K, a refresh rate of 144 Hz, coverage of 97% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, and a brightness of 500 nits. The display is touchscreen-enabled and can be rotated 180 degrees, enabling the device to be used as a tablet. Thus, the GPD Pocket 4 serves as a 2-in-1 tablet and laptop.
At the core of the Pocket 4 is the hybrid APU AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor. This chip includes 12 processing cores based on the Zen 5 architecture, 16 cores of integrated graphics based on the RDNA 3.5 architecture, and a neural processing unit (NPU) with a performance of 50 TOPS. The processor features a configurable TDP ranging from 20 to 28 watts. The configuration also supports up to 64 GB of LPDDR5-7500 RAM, with 16 GB specifically allocated for the integrated Radeon 890M graphics. The company claims this setup will provide a “smooth gaming experience.” Additionally, an M.2 2280 storage solution is offered, with capacities of up to 4 TB.
GPD shared some performance metrics for the Pocket 4. In single-core performance, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 is comparable to the Ryzen 9 7950X, while in multi-core performance, it matches the Ryzen 9 5950X. In graphical tests, the company compares the Radeon 890M iGPU's performance to that of the Intel Arc 140V (featured in the Core Ultra 7 268V).
The Pocket 4 is not a gaming device. While it can be used for gaming, unlike other GPD devices, it does not come with a built-in game controller. Instead, it features a physical keyboard and a small touchpad. The device is cooled by a single-fan cooler, and it has a built-in battery with a capacity of 44.8 Wh. Available ports include one USB4, one HDMI 2.1, one USB 3.2 Gen2 (Type-A), one USB 3.2 Gen2 (Type-C), one USB 2.0 Type-A, and a 2.5 Gb/s LAN port.
Another interesting feature is the modular port. Users can replace the rear port with an analog RS-232 module, a KVM module, or additional USB ports. For those looking to expand storage, an SD card slot is available. There is also a module for installing an LTE modem.
The price and release date of the GPD Pocket 4 have yet to be disclosed.
