The European Commission has launched an official investigation into the operation of AliExpress - an international e-commerce website operated by the Chinese tech giant Alibaba.
It is reported that AliExpress allegedly distributes pornographic and other illegal content. This indicates potential moderation issues, which are subject to very strict requirements in the new EU Digital Services Act (DSA) that came into force this month.
Previously, the EU issued warnings about moderation issues to Meta, while X and TikTok are undergoing their own investigations. In case of confirmed violations, companies may face fines of up to 6% of their global annual turnover.
CNBC notes that in addition, the commission will investigate whether AliExpress adhered to its own terms of service - regarding the prohibition of health-risk products or counterfeit drugs.
Overall, the list of "very large platforms" (with more than 45 million users) subject to DSA regulation includes 19 platforms - AliExpress, Amazon, AppStore, Bing, Booking.com, Facebook, Google Play, Google Maps, Google Search, Google Shopping, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Snapchat, Tik Tok, Twitter, Wikipedia, YouTube, and Zalando.
