Now, new information suggests that Apple will eliminate the Action Button and merge it with the volume adjustment button on the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models.
Regarding the solid-state button, the iPhone was expected to feature a singular long volume button that wouldn't be mechanical. Instead, it was intended to use haptic feedback from the Taptic Engine to simulate the feeling of a button press, similar to how the company implemented the camera control button.

Based on recent trends, it is likely that the company could employ capacitive touch technology, akin to the Camera Control Button. This functions as a standard button but also incorporates capacitive controls, allowing users to swipe up and down for various tasks.
It would make sense to utilize the same technology for merging the volume and Action Button. For instance, a standard press could initiate the Action Button's functions, while a basic tap and swipe on the button would adjust the device's volume. This is merely speculation, and the final implementation for the iPhone 17 Pro models may differ significantly.
