The research paper, published in the journal Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, was about the function of stem cells associated with rat testes. However, the subject of the research itself did not attract attention. The authors of the research included several images that were fantastically and grotesquely incorrect. In the article, the authors indicated that the images were created using Midjourney, one of the most popular image generators using artificial intelligence. The article was retracted on February 16, three days after publication, reports Gizmodo.
The study included low-quality drawings and annotations, generated by artificial intelligence, including "rats." Despite existing processes to ensure compliance, further use of AI-generated images that contradict our clear recommendations went unnoticed, and the article was published.

However, problematic illustrations made it to print. One of the reviewers of the article stated that the images were not his responsibility. The article was downloaded over 24,000 times and viewed 358,673 times. The work undoubtedly attracted more attention than it would have if it had scientifically accurate illustrations.
