The American telecommunications company AT&T has started analyzing data published in the darknet about two weeks ago and found that the leak affected approximately 8.6 million active account holders and 65.4 million former customers.

Referring to AT&T's report, Reuters writes that the leak occurred before 2019, however, the company "has no evidence of unauthorized access to the systems." It is also unknown whether the data came directly from AT&T or one of its suppliers.

The incident did not have a significant impact on the network's operation, the company says, which has already reset passwords for 7.6 million active customers and is in touch with all affected individuals.

The AT&T network covers approximately 290 million people in the U.S. The data leak includes customers' names, home addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, and social security numbers.

Recall that in December of last year, the largest Ukrainian operator "Kyivstar" suffered a massive cyberattack - the company's president Alexander Komarov called it "the largest hacker attack on telecom infrastructure in the world." It was noted that the first attempts to penetrate the system by hackers, presumably from the Russian GRU Sandworm, were made back in March of 2023. More than 24 million subscribers of the operator were left without communication and internet for several days. To compensate for the losses, "Kyivstar" canceled the subscription fee for a month - this cost 3.6 billion hryvnias.

According to the State Special Communications Service, the number of cyber attacks on Ukrainian companies, government organizations, and the security and defense sector increased by 15.9% in 2023. In 2024, the attacks continued - in January, the data center "Parkovy" was affected, causing partial disruptions to the services of "Naftogaz", "Ukrposhta", "Ukrzaliznytsia", as well as the border crossing system "Shlyakh".
