The new version of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 18.1, is set to be released next week. It will introduce several new features, with the key ones being Apple Intelligence and support for AirPods Pro 2 as hearing aids.

Let's start with the hearing aids. Since the end of 2022, companies in the U.S. have been allowed to sell hearing aids over the counter. Apple announced this new feature at its September event, and the FDA approved it for use just days later. It includes a test that helps individuals determine if they may have hearing loss. If the test detects a decline in hearing, the software will recommend a professional examination.

This new feature will also enable users to configure their AirPods Pro as hearing aids. In this mode, the device will amplify sounds and allow users to make real-time dynamic adjustments. However, unlike traditional hearing aids, wearing AirPods while conversing with someone may give the impression that you are not engaging with the person or are ignoring them. This update could significantly enhance the accessibility of auditory assistance for those with hearing impairments. Hearing aids can cost thousands of dollars, while the AirPods Pro 2 are priced at $249.

The artificial intelligence features of Apple Intelligence will be a more noticeable innovation in iOS 18.1. The company first unveiled its perspective on AI during the June WWDC. Apple Intelligence offers a range of initial functionalities, notably smart audio recording and transcription for applications like Mail, Notes, and Pages. The AI also includes writing tools for tasks such as spell-checking and grammar correction. Apple is expected to release more features for its AI tool in future updates.
