Apple is likely to introduce a new messaging standard RCS this fall to replace SMS/MMS.

Apple is likely to expand RCS support in the upcoming iOS 18 update.

Techcrunch reports on this, referring to a section on a new Google Messages page.

The page described the key benefits of RCS. One section was marked "coming soon to iOS" with the title "Best Messaging for Everyone." This is no longer visible on the page, but the information is still displayed in the source code.

The RCS protocol extends the SMS standard to almost internet messenger capabilities. Users can share photos and videos, receive read and typing indicators from the recipient, create group chats. In some implementations of RCS, messaging is protected by end-to-end encryption.

Apple noted that RCS will work alongside iMessage, which still remains the "best and most secure messaging platform for Apple users."

At the same time, iMessage will not go anywhere. It will continue to be the messaging platform used for communication between iPhone users. RCS will replace SMS and MMS and will exist separately from iMessage. SMS and MMS will remain available if needed.

"Apple has announced that it will introduce RCS in the fall of 2024. Once this happens, everyone will receive the best messaging experience," the description says.

It is worth noting that Apple announced the adoption of the RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging standard at the end of 2023.

Apple's decision to adopt the RCS standard was made under pressure from competitors like Google and Samsung, as well as regulators. In a statement to 9to5Mac, an Apple representative said that RCS will offer better cross-platform messaging compatibility.
