In March, YouTube began testing a new feature called Jump ahead, and now it has become available to a wider range of users through the youtube.com/new section. It is available to Premium version service subscribers.
Jump ahead is an artificial intelligence-based feature that allows you to speed up the viewing of long videos by skipping uninteresting and boring fragments. To use this feature, you need to double-tap the screen, similar to the forward command. After that, a new button will appear, which will "move you forward to where most viewers usually jump ahead". The Jump ahead button in the form of a pill appears for a few seconds in the lower right corner, and then disappears if the user just wants to skip ahead in the video for 10 seconds.
By touching the button, you can see an overlay "Skipping through a section that is often skipped," denoted by YouTube Premium. YouTube uses artificial intelligence and viewing data to determine the "next best point" for viewing. Based on the viewing history of videos by other users, the service determines the segments that generated the most interest and were usually skipped. Jump ahead allows you to immediately fast forward through an uninteresting segment and move on to something interesting.
The feature is available to YouTube Premium subscribers in the mobile app on Android in the United States. To activate it, you need to go to Settings > Try new experimental features. Currently, the feature only works for videos in English, however, it is "not available for every video," and requires the video to have a large number of views. The experiment is expected to last until June 1st.
