The head of Bethesda Game Studios Todd Howard asked the producers of the Fallout series not to include certain secret things in it, as the developer plans to use them in Fallout 5. In a conversation with Den of Geek, the creators of the series did not disclose details of their show or games, but talked about the close connection of their lore.

In the screen adaptation of Fallout, creators of "Westworld" Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, as well as showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner are involved. Todd Howard from Bethesda, who headed the creation of each main game in the series starting with Fallout 3 in 2008. During the SXSW 2024 festival, journalists spoke with most of the creative team of the series and the main cast to learn more about their views on video games. They asked the team to clarify a recent comment by Nolan about the status of the TV show in the Fallout game canon, which caused excitement among fans.

«Our series is connected to the games, as the games are connected to each other. It's almost like we're Fallout, — Nolan said earlier. — I don't want to sound bold, but it's just a non-interactive version, right?»

Some concerned fans quickly took this as the series replacing the game Fallout 5. But Nolan and Howard say otherwise in response to the question.

«I think it would be very bold for anyone to assume that we will reach the caliber of games,» says Nolan, also explaining the benefits of placing the show on the same timeline as Bethesda's titles (the action of the Amazon series unfolds after all the games, in 2296). «This means you have all the benefits of great storytelling, joined by Todd, but we can also tell an original story in this world. For us as writers and directors, it's just a dream come true».

«I think we made Fallout 6, — Wagner jokes during the conversation. «We know all about Fallout 5, we're not telling anyone», — Nolan adds playfully.

Todd Howard knows all about the real game Fallout 5. Bethesda is already working on the game, but it will not go into production until the team finishes work on The Elder Scrolls 6. Taking advantage of this, Todd dissuaded the creators of the show from anything that could contradict the story of Fallout 5.

«There were some moments when I said: 'Don't do this, because we're going to do this in Fallout 5,'» intrigues Howard. At the same time, he assures that the Fallout series tells its own original story that does not repeat events from the games.

During our conversation, Howard clearly defined the goal of the team's work: to create a series that will appeal to both longtime fans of the games and newcomers.

«In many ways, the game is just one of the portals to the world. Yes, you control everything, but it can be a little intimidating to many people,» Howard says. «They're not going to sit and learn the game, it's a big learning process. In a television format, it can be very cinematic — as Jonathan says, 'we're here shooting an eight-hour movie.' If you're already a fan of this series, you can move on to the next chapter of Fallout. If you're not a fan and a little intimidated by such a game, you can feel all the good things about this world by pressing your button and enjoying it».
