A large-scale study supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) has debunked the common belief that mobile phone radio waves are carcinogenic.
Researchers analyzed over 5,000 studies published from 1994 to 2022. They selected 63 works that included participants from 22 countries. The results indicated no link between mobile phone use and the development of brain cancer, even among those who used devices for more than ten years.
The study refuted the assumption that the number of calls or the duration of conversations affects the onset of cancer. Additionally, the scientists found no association with other types of head and neck cancers.
Previously, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified radio waves as "possibly carcinogenic" This category also includes aloe vera, coffee, and firefighting — totaling over 1,000 different factors.
Ken Karipidis, the lead author of the study and deputy director of health impact assessment at the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA), commented on the findings:
“This systematic review of observational studies is based on a significantly larger data set than that considered by the IARC. It incorporates newer and more comprehensive studies, allowing us to confidently assert that exposure to radio waves from wireless technologies does not pose a risk to human health.”
The research team led by Karipidis continues to investigate the potential link between mobile phone use and other types of cancer, particularly leukemia.
The study results were published in the journal Environmental International.
