Artificial intelligence for image generation launched on Commodore 64

The release of Commodore 64 in August 1982 was a significant event. It was a popular personal computer that became one of the best-selling PCs of its time. Surprisingly, although the old hardware platform does not meet modern requirements, it can still be used for calculations relevant today.

Developer and enthusiast Nick Bild successfully created and documented a generative AI tool for Commodore 64, which can be used to create 8x8 sprites that are then displayed in a 64x64 resolution. They are intended to inspire game design concepts, but of course, do not reach the level of creating whole sprite sheets in a single query. Existing games also have a much higher level of AI implementation.

Anyway, it is amazing that any generative artificial intelligence model can run on such old equipment. Of course, the old system requires more time for calculations than modern powerful devices. To perform 94 iterations for the final image, it takes 20 minutes.

It is also worth noting that the "probably probabilistic PCA algorithm" running on Commodore 64 and used for this project was actually trained on a modern computer. Thus, although the model runs on Commodore 64, a modern PC is still needed to launch it and start working.
