The new Audi A3 lineup, introduced this week, will be available with a range of subscription-based features. After purchase, car owners will be able to purchase additional comfort options and informational-entertainment content through the myAudi app.

Among such paid subscription features are adaptive cruise control, high beam assistant, and a smartphone interface that allows the use of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto through the infotainment system. Even the function of dual-zone climate control will now be a paid subscription option.

Car owners (if we can still use this term to refer to customers who are required to pay a subscription for access to features) can choose the duration of paid features. The manufacturer notes that they can be activated for a month, six months, a year, 3 years, or forever, depending on the needs. BMW once tried this trick with subscription-based heated seats, but later had to abandon the idea.

Theoretically, access to subscription-based features will allow some customers to reduce the average cost of owning a car. For example, when going on a long trip only twice a year, you can activate adaptive cruise control or satellite navigation only when needed, and not pay the rest of the time when they are not needed. However, customers may think that they are being charged twice for the same product, as the equipment for the blocked features is already installed on the sold car.

The price of the Audi A3 sedan in Europe starts at €36450.
